I have raced at Payerne twice before (10km in 2022, and 10km in 2024) and it's a race I enjoy going to at the beginning of the season to test where I'm at. Usually, I would aim to run the 10km, but this year after an injury in the winter and a few colds, I wasn't ready to push hard for 10km. I entered the 5km race instead.
In the race, I just went as hard as I could from the gun all the way to the finish. It felt great to be running hard and to see some progress from where I had been just a few weeks before. I was by myself most of the way, but managed to pass a couple of runners who were fading while I managed to hold my pace in the last kilometer.
I was very happy with how the day went. Even though it was the slowest 5km I've run on that route (the 10km race is two 5km loops), it was a sign of tremendous progress from not being able to run at all a month before.
I'm not where I want to be at this point in the season, but it's also not a disaster. I have to work with the fitness I have and progress as quickly as I can to be ready for the big goals in the summer.
