Last year I ran the ChaChaCha 84km trail race (my race report here). I enjoyed the event and I had a good race with a strong finish to end out my 2021 season. This year I wasn't planning to go back, but at the beginning of the week I received an email from the race organiser saying there was still time to sign up for the race. I decided to do the 22km distance and signed up at the last minute.
The route was challenging and a little different to races I've done before. It was a point-to-point race starting in Le Châble and finishing in Champex Lac with the first half being flat and fast and the second half a steep climb up to Champex.
Within 2km of the start the field had already split up with one runner ahead of me and everyone else falling behind. I didn't see anyone for most of the race so I stuck to my plan which was to run at close to threshold and to hold that effort through the changes in terrain. It was almost a time trial and I did my best to manage my race carefully and to run the best I could at each point throughout the race.
I was happy with how I performed relative to previous results (last year the winner ran 2:07) and compared to what I thought I could do on the day (I was aiming for close to 2:00). It was a solid effort and a great result.
