I added the Torgon Trail race to my calendar after missing one of my first goals of the season due to illness. I know the region well after training there regularly and also from helping Roberto prepare for Swiss Peaks a few years ago. The Portes du Soleil is a trail running paradise and I was excited to join the 20km race and work some of my climbing muscles.
I ran a controlled race holding my effort at a level I knew I could achieve for the whole race. As usual with a more conservative start, I was passing other runners from about 5km into the race and I worked my way up the field gradually. It was a fantastic route and the weather on the day was perfect which led to a very enjoyable race for me.
A fast start and then straight into the mountains. |
On my way! |
A wonderful place for a trail race. |
The ridgeline and highest point of the race. |
Looking down at other villages in the Portes du Soleil. |
Across the bridge and heading to the finish (this time I ran across it!). |
I was happy with how I managed my race and I did the best I could given the fitness I had on the day. Unfortunately I felt like I lost quite a bit of momentum in the month leading into the race due to illness and missed training. It's amazing how quickly my form can turn around. The good news is that this was a solid outing and I'm back on the upswing and getting stronger and faster again.
